Championship weekend picks
Last week: 2-2
Season record: 158-106-1
Every year the same thing happens. We're all excited for the season to kick off, and then we blink and it's Week 9. We blink again and they're talking about playoff scenarios. One more blink and here we are on the verge of Championship weekend, four teams remaining to determine who will hoist the Lombardi trophy in 16 days. So remember to savor these last few games, especially since Tom Brady and Bill Belichick will be watching them from their respective couches.
Tennessee at Kansas City--The paths these two teams took to get here are interesting. The Titans squeaked in with a Week 17 win and some other things that fell into place. Then they vanquished the defending champs and the AFC's 1-seed who everyone had been anointing world champions, with fast and hard-hitting defense, efficient and lethal QB play from Ryan Tannehill, and a human steamroller in Derrick Henry. The Chiefs had a solid season, and grabbed the 2-seed in Week 17, hence avoiding Wild Card Weekend. Then they fell into a 24-0 hole at home against DeShaun Watson's Texans in the FIRST QUARTER. They dropped passes, they had some bad bounces and bad luck, and looked rusty. Until Patrick Mahomes remembered he was Superman and the Chiefs scored 51 points en route to a 51-31 annihilation. You may also remember the Chiefs lost to the Titans a few years back in the wild card round. But this is Mahomes' (and Andy Reid's) time to get to the big one. Chiefs 27, Titans 26
Green Bay at San Francisco--Last week, Aaron Rodgers made some sick plays when he had to, but his defense was really the story in somehow stopping MVP candidate Russell Wilson from magically stealing the game that his Hawks looked sluggish in for the first half. Meanwhile, the Niners made swift work of the Vikings at home, with a powerful ground attack and dominant defense. The Packers were destroyed 37-8 on this field a few weeks ago. This will not be a repeat of that, will it? Probably not but the result will be the same. Niners 23, Packers 19
